Pretty Perfect Portraits of Some Absolute Studs

Loop
Paramount
Rembrandt
Split

1.Which is your favorite portrait photo that you took? Why?

My favorite photo was the Loop photo. The Lighting was great and it was super easy to take the picture. The loop photo is also the best technique because it always makes the subject look great.

2.Which of these lighting techniques do you think you can apply for future picture taking? Explain.

I think that the Split and Paramount techniques would be the easiest to replicate. You can use both of these techniques outside. The Rembrandt and Loop are a lot harder to use because you have shoot the lighting and subject perfectly.

Motion

Motion Blur (.6 second shutter speed, ISO 1600, Aperture f/36)
Light (2.6 second shutter speed, ISO 1600, Aperture f/36)
Motion Freeze (1/800 shutter speed, ISO 1250, f/4.0)

If I were to give another peer advice on taking motion pictures I would tell them to make sure they have good lighting. Lighting is key in taking these pictures. If you don’t have good lighting it can ruin your whole picture.

Oil and Water

a. What is the distinct mood of the photograph? Explain.
The mood of the oil and water photograph is kind of uneasy. I wanted the green and blue to come together and look like they’re fighting. The colors of blue and green kind of give a creepy feel to it.
b. What does the photo make you think about? Explain.
In my post with the oil and water I wanted it to make you feel like two things were clashing. In this photo the green and blue look like they’re fighting.
c. What in the photo jumps out at you? Explain.
The bright green really stands out. You go from looking at the dark blue to looking at very bright green.
d. How does the photo make you feel? Explain.
The photo makes me feel kind of angry. The blue and green are clashing together. This kind of gives a war vibe.
e. What advice would you give to next year’s students for shooting abstract photography? Explain.
I would tell next year’s students to make sure you get the right photo. You don’t want to settle for a photo that you don’t want. You have to really give thought to the type of picture you want.

Q1 How did you choose the specific types of food for each portrait? What is their significance? Explain – be specific! (3 sentences min.)

I chose an apple for each of my photos. I liked them for their unique and bright colors. I liked its shape too.

Q2 Consider the lighting in your photographs. What was the light source in each of your photos. What time of day? How did it affect the mood and atmosphere of the portraits? Explain – be specific!  (3 sentences min.)

The lighting in my photo at school was the sun at morning. It was a better lighting than if it would be at noon. The lighting for my photo at home was the kitchen lights. It was at night so there was no sunlight coming through the windows.

Q3 Think about the composition of your photos. Name the composition technique you used for each photo. Why did you choose to crop your photos as shown? Be specific! (3 sentences min.)

I wanted my food to be at the center of the image. This way it would catch the viewer’s eye immediately. I used the crop tool to make this happen.

Q4 How do the colors and color splash technique in your photographs contribute to the overall impact of the images? Why did you choose to mask the specific areas in color for each photo? Be specific!  (3 sentences min.)

The color in both of my apples was bright so it caught the viewer’s eye. Red catches the viewer’s eye quickly so I chose a red apple. I chose to mask the areas that I believed were less bright or were less eye catching.

Q5 Consider the technical aspects of your photography, such as focus (lens size 75-300(lg) or 18-35(reg), or iphone mode/focus), depth of field (blurry background), and exposure (value in PS adjustment of your black, grays, whites). How did you use these techniques to enhance your images? Be specific! (3 sentences min.)

I chose to take a far background photo for my at school photo so I got the background in. There also was not any light in the background so you focus on the subject.
Q6 What advice would you give to next year’s students for shooting food portraits? Be specific! (3 sentences min.)

I would suggest that they do not wait until the last minute to take their pictures. I think it’s important to prioritize it and spend a good amount of time editing them. I also would suggest to not just quickly take a picture. They should take into account the lighting and other elements in their pictures. If they do this it should be a breeze.

1. What strengths and weaknesses do you see in your own work?

I struggled a bit with editing my photos. It was strenuous and I still have a lot to learn about not only editing but photoshop too. I think however that my strengths were my ability to find the right lighting. I think that in a couple of my pictures I got some really good lighting.

2. How might you improve or refine your approach in future photography projects?

I think that I could watch a couple of videos on how to edit better on my photos. I also think that I could be a little more focused when I was outside. This would help me to find better angles, better subjects, and better lighting.

3. Pick one of your photos, what emotions or messages did you intend to convey through this photograph?

I think that my photo with the pink flower was really special. What caught my eye about this flower, was the bright colors in it. It looked so beautiful especially in the morning sunlight.

4. Are there specific elements of art you would like to explore further in your photography?

I would like to explore nature photography more. I really enjoyed snapping pictures of the flowers and the animals. It was really exciting to find an animal and try to get as close as possible without scaring it.

5. What concepts or techniques do you want to experiment with in your next project?

I would like to get a couple of pictures at night. It would be really cool to get some different lighting and get more of a dark look into the photos. I would also like to experiment with more spacious photos. I would like to get some pictures out on the field and get some space.

A Beautiful September Morning at Oratory

An OP student on Cavalero Field hard at work taking a picture

What I enjoyed most about this excursion to explore the Oratory campus was the hard work in the air. Every student was working hard and having a good time. Even though there was some joking around, everyone was working hard and dedicated to their pictures.

The biggest challenge of photographing with a DSLR camera was trying to find the perfect photo. There are so many elements of taking a picture that I didn’t think about. Photographers have to get the right lighting, the right angle, focus, zoom, and the right subject.

During the next photo shoot I will take more pictures of nature. If a photograph of nature is taken correctly it can be very beautiful. I want to take pictures of animals or trees.
